The TT has arrived...not Teh Tarik. It'sThe Audi TT!

The new Audi TT has finally made it here.  In the late afternoon on a Sunday, trucks load of the new TT are being unloaded at Euromobil Glenmarie.  Not one, but many of them.  Bet that a lot of the Audi TT Club Malaysia members must have put their RM285k of saving for this latest generation coupe, and many Teh Tarik sessions had happened on the discussion of the new TT.  However, showroom experience in the DRB Hicom owned Glenmarie Euromobil is not up to expectation.  Firstly, they shut their gate at 4pm instead of following 5pm (as published in their website).  Secondly, most sales person are more interested in their own solitary time instead of walking up to a potential customer.  No wonder Audi AG has taken over from DRB Hicom as the sole distributor and importer instead.  Audi AG, a lot of customer experience improvement needed for your dealerships!

The new Audi TT now bears a sharper front, with a trapezoidal headlight instead of the previous generation that and all rounded from front to tail.  It is finally a car for the macho man now.  The tame look is gone, though the rear still resemble the roundish outgoing unit.

Engine is the familiar 2-litre TFSI, mated to the 6-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox.  This base engine is able of 230hp/370Nm of power sending to the front.  Quattro 4-wheel-drive version is not available in Malaysia as of now.  But looking at the popularity of the previous TT on our roads, if not official from Audi, grey imports shall be available very soon as well.

The interior of the Audi is fantastic, especially the digital Audi virtual cockpit.  The all digital screen in front of the driver provides all vital information and settings for the car, which make the center console as simple yet functional.  The airplane-engine style aircon vents are fabulous, giving a sense of luxury with speed.  6-second to the century sprint, at at RM285k a pop, it is no wonder this grand-tourer is so popular.

As a 2+2 seater coupe, the TT is equipped with 6-airbag, and a host of standard safety features, such as the ESC (Electronic Stabilisation Control), TPM, ISOFIX...Oh wait, ISOFIX for child seat?  Yes, and ISOFIX is available at the front passenger seat.  Do remember to off the passenger airbag though!  Alcantara/leather combination seat is as comfortable as an Audi should be.  However, for the TT, and if it were in white colour, the brown Nappa leather will fit in perfectly.  By the way, those still confuse on what Alcantara is about, wiki it.  It is just a synthetic fiber that feels like suede and it is not leather.

The TT travels on 18" cast aluminium rim, wrapped with 245/40R18 rubbers.  Twin tail pipes are standard, but the location is somehow mismatch.  The designer should move the tail pipe further to the sides or place them both in the middle.  The spoiler automatically rises up at about 120km/h, and this is good indication telling our traffic camera that it is running at illegal speed.  Folks, bring the car to a track event and it only cost about RM300-RM500 for a session.  Be safe than sorry.

Again, at RM285k, the Audi TT is indeed easily reachable when compare to other similar range coupe.  It is definitely better than the Peugeot RCZ which cost RM272k, and you get yourself a German-engineered car instead of the French, which has a lame 1.6-litre engine.

If you want a rear wheel drive coupe instead, the Mercedes SLK or BMW Z4 could be better choice.  But why not wait for the all new Mazda MX-5.  Except for being a Japanese brand, it is still the world best selling roadster!  However, the 4-ring brand is still worth the money for its luxurious image.

Mercedes SL63 AMG, power monster @ RM1million

When the standard SL350 could not quench your thirst of power and you are a loyal customer of the three-pointed-star, and not willing to settle for the less comfortable Porsche 911, here you have the SL63 AMG, when you have a million extra to spend.  Equipped with a 5.5-litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine mated to AMG 7-speed speedshift transmission, with 530hp/800Nm of power, the owner better bring the car to the track to really enjoy the speed that is available, and it has LSD as standard.  Carbon ceramic brake is needed to halt this monster.  On a normal weekend, with the top down, it could be the best machine to travel on some B-road and enjoy the scenic view with some fresh air.

Interior of the SL63 is as Mercedes, with some added touch of AMG.  Red Nappa leather add to the sportiness and scream of luxury to your neighbor Ferrari or Porsche.  No other sport cars could beat the experience of a Mercedes bringing status, comfort, luxury, cabriolet in one package.  7" infotainment screen, southward pointing meter cluster and a host of button that could control different driving mode of the incredible machine.

If you however think that the SL63 is too fast to handle, the SL350 is available at only RM900k, which comes with a 3.5-litre engine that still produces a good 300hp/370Nm.  When speed is your middle name, then the SL65 AMG is what you should go after.  The V12 bi-turbo could generate 620hp/1000Nm of power.  If you ever own one, any of the variant, you better keep your seat belt on all the time!

The scolding of Renault Fluence's owners

"#%^^$%#*&" is the first response for Renault Fluence's owner in Malaysia, as Tan Chong happily brought in the older generation of the car, then launch the 2012 facelifted model in a short 6 months gap.  Well, it could be their "go-to-market" test, selling the pre-facelifted model at just under RM100k, trying to gauge the acceptance of the French C-Segment car in the crowded space.  The dealer could get huge discount from the manufacturer assisting them to clear off their old stock.  Anyhow, finally, here is the latest 2015 facelifted Renault Fluence, the one that is finally in-line with the what rest of the markets are having.

The fully loaded "Dynamique" variant as shown here, is fitted with rear LED tail lights, daylight running light, leather seat and dual-tone 17" alloy wheels to make itself different from the "Expression" unit, which is asking for RM120k, an additional of RM11k.  Not a lot of differences here for the RM11k additional, but one will get the "5 influence" after sales service which include 5 years free labour and parts services, free pickup for every service and courtesy car if the repair exceed 48-hour.

The engine here is still similar to the pre-facelift Fluence, which is from the previous generation of the Nissan Sylphy, mated to a Nissan X-Tronic CVT gearbox.  Four official colours, Ultra Silver, Black Metallic, Mars Grey and White Pearl are available, and limited units of Red as shown here.  For those that would love to have a continental family car, with Japanese reliability, the Renault Fluence could be a good choice as the facelifted model finally looks and feels good.  It is also priced competitively in the segment.  Of course, if you could pay more, the shopping list could add in the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis.

The Fluence price sit in the range of the Korean, and might suffer the similar fate of depreciation in value. But for this price, and 5 years of worry free motoring, well worth it.  Tan Chong, we want the Renault Captur and bring back the Kangoo!
